One of the biggest pain points we hear from brands is the confusion surrounding platform-provided music. Just because a song is available on a platform, doesn’t mean a brand has the right to use it for a commercial campaign. Brands need to use the platform commercial library or royalty-free tracks, and also need to ensure they stay compliant after licenses have changed and tracks are removed from commercial libraries. What’s “safe” today could result in a muted video or a copyright issue tomorrow.
To help brands navigate this complexity, we are excited to announce a major update to our music monitoring solution for brands: Commercial library identification for Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok.
What’s new?
We have integrated commercial library tags directly into the Pex web app. Now, when our technology identifies a song in your content, you can review the music information to see if that track is part of a platform’s pre-cleared commercial library.
This update provides two critical layers of protection:
1. Real-time risk assessment
When auditing your published content or scanning new uploads, you no longer have to cross-reference spreadsheets or manually search the platform’s library. By identifying tracks belonging to the official commercial libraries of Meta (Instagram/Facebook) and TikTok, Pex helps you assess your risk level before a copyright issue impacts your marketing.
2. Tracking “library churn”
Music libraries are not static. A song that is available for commercial use this month might be removed next month due to expiring licensing agreements. Our new identification feature helps brands keep a record of their posts and a song’s library status at the time of posting. If a song previously identified as “commercial” is no longer in the library, brands can check their web app to see if the song was marked as commercial when they used it. Having a record of their music use and knowing that the song was in the commercial library at the time can show music was used properly, and that any potential copyright infringement was not willful.
Why this matters for brands
Platform music licenses are complex and differ from one app to the next. By using Pex to monitor your own channels and your influencer partners, you can:
- Prevent campaign disruption: Avoid having a high-performing video muted or removed.
- Empower influencer teams: Quickly audit influencer content to ensure they are using approved commercial tracks rather than personal-use-only music.
- Protect your bottom line: Reduce the risk of copyright infringement claims and legal fees.
Get started
Navigating copyright compliance on social media doesn’t have to be a manual process. With Pex, you can identify music with unmatched accuracy and gain the context you need to stay compliant.
