With the arrival of ChatGPT, AI has become mainstream and is being integrated into a wide range of consumer tools. But generative AI that produces music and other typically copyrightable content can cause issues for creators and copyright owners. The lack of policy around a quickly growing industry leaves many unanswered questions for AI-generated content.

  • Will there be consequences for AI-generated content that may be infringing on someone else’s copyright?
  • Can AI models be trained on copyrighted material that was not licensed?
  • Will AI-generated content that leverages the likeness of someone else (like creating a voice that sounds like Drake) be legal?

Because of these unknowns, music rightsholders are looking for ways to identify and track AI-generated content, especially AI-generated music and voices.

Technology for AI-generated content identification

At Pex, we use digital fingerprinting to enable accurate and large-scale content identification across social media platforms and analyze music usage on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. When it comes to AI content, our ACR technology can be used in a few different ways to identify AI-generated music and voices. Our technology can also help generative AI platforms validate that their training data does not contain copyrighted works. As it becomes more difficult to know where a piece of content originated from, content identification technology will become increasingly important for tracking AI-generated media and determining what’s ‘real’.

Identify AI-generated music and voices with Pex

Automated Content Recognition (ACR) and Music Recognition Technology (MRT) can be used to identify uses of existing AI-generated music today. Pex uses these technologies and others to identify AI-generated music. Our solutions can recognize new uses of existing AI tracks, detect impersonations of artists, and help determine when music is likely to be AI-generated.
